Major Points
- A drop in one pH unit results in a ten times stronger water solution, one pH unit increase causes the water to be ten times more basic
- A polar species known as pteropods may have to leave the area to a different one, however the ecosystem will be affected
- A large fraction of the CO2 in the atmosphere ends up in the ocean.
- If we continue with the excess CO2, pH in several centuries will at its lowest since 300 million years ago
- As ocean becomes more and more acidic, the upper, shell friendly portion will become smaller
- Ocean has absorbed fully half of fossil carbon released to the atmosphere since the Industrial Revolution
- The calcium carbonate in coral reefs and other shells come in two forms: calcite and aragonite
- Shells may also disintegrate under the factors of temperature and pressure
- As the ocean is becoming more and more acidic, there are less safe zone for calcifying organisms
- An experimented was conducted that showed a decline of calcium carbonate even when the water was supersaturated with argonite
Summarize Main Thoughts and Idea of Author
The author is talking about how the acid in the ocean is harming the shells animals in the ocean.
This is happening because as us humans use products that emit alot of CO2, that co2 is harming
our ocean. As the co2 goes in the air then it gets absorbed by the ocean. The shells are made up of
the component calcium carbonate, the acidity that the ocean is gaining is hurting them.
If the shelled animals become extinct then alot of bad stuff could happen. Everything wouldnt work
as right as before.

What are your thoughts?
I think that our ocean is a really big thing that we should protect. Before we came im pretty sure
the ocean was healthy and had alot of life. As us humans we eat alot, we overfish and we use
cars that emit co2 and bad gasses. That can hurt the ocean alot. If we keep hurtin the ocean like this
i think that mother nature would come back at us hard. Even though we cant fix this in one day, we should start now
before any bigger things happen.
