Solid And Hazardous Waste ( NOTES )
- Largest landfill was closed in 2001, in New York. It plans to transform the landfill into a local park.
- Between 1842-1953, Hooker Chemicals sealed multiple chemical waste into steel drums and was dumped into the old canal (Love Canal).
- In 1953, the canal was filed and sold to Niagara Falls school board for $1. In 1957, the Hooker Chemicals warned schools not to disturb the site because of all of the toxic waste. In the year 1976, residents complained of chemical smells and burns coming from the site.
- President Jimmy Carter, declared the Love Canal a federal disaster area. The area was later abandoned in 1980.
- To this day there is still controversy about how the residents got injured or diseases from the chemicals.
- Due to the Love Canal, it created the Superfund Law, that enforced pollutants to pay for the cleaning of abandoned toxic waste dumps.
- Waste- Any discarded material for which no further sale or use is intended. Examples of waste are residue, chemicals-by-products, unused virgin material. Solid waste is unwanted or discarded material we produce that is not a liquid or gas. Municipal solid waste is produced directly from homes.
- Industrial solid waste is produced indirectly by industries that supply people with goods and services.
- Waste stream is a flow of waste as it moves from its sources towards disposal destination
- 2 ways for waste management is: 1-Recycling, sending the used goods to manufacture new goods. 2-Composting, recovery of organic waste. All materials in nature are recycled.
- E Waste consists of toxic and hazardous waste such as PVC, lead, mercury, and cadmium. The U.S. produces over half of the world's E-Waste, but only 10% of it is recycled.
- The US sells trash to China for recycling, that turns in the economy has devalued the recycling industry.
- Sanitary landfills=waste buried in the ground or piled in large, engineered mounds. Waste is partially decomposed by bacteria and compresses under its own weight to make more space.Layered with soil to reduce odor, speed decomposition, reduce infestation by pets .When a landfill is closed, it must be capped and maintained.
- The reason why we have landfills are because they are to protect groundwater, protect surface water, air quality and control pathogenic migration.
