A: List the major ideas, concepts, or key points- point by point
- The burning of fossil fuel has produce high amounts of nitrogen oxides. Rain and wind carries this compound into waters, further enriching he carcasses of partially devoured salmon end up on the ground and help provide nutrients from oceans to streams to woodland
- When older salmon migrate back and die, there is a large flow of nutrients and energy from the ocean to the streams and lake ecosystem
- For example one chum salmon contains an average of 130 grams of nitrogen, 20 grams of phosphorus and 20 thousand kilojoules of energy presented in the form of fat and lipids
- Salmons are crucial to both grizzlies and black bears because their reproductive success and survival depend on them. Bears don't eat or drink during hibernation however the bears do keep their temperature higher than their surrounding. Females give birth and lactate their young during this time
- Because their survival is so dependent, bears may fight other bears and steal fish
- After analyzing 20,000 carcasses, what was found was only about 25% of each salmon was eaten, mostly areas with the highest fat content
- After eating the choice parts, the bears go back for another salmon
- After the bears eat the small portion of the fish the rest of the carcass is abandoned. The nutrients within the carcass are available to the plants and animals who wouldn't have gotten these nutrients
- The nutrients get to other animals when insects and birds eat the leftovers. Insects also "colonize" the carcass where they will lay eggs
B: Summarize the authors main point or idea- at LEAST 1-2 paragraphs
In this article the author explains something that is extremely important to us. Bears a ferocious predator in the forest love to eat salmon
When bears go hunt for salmon they usually wait by a current and snag salmon while they are swimming. Bears will fight over salmon because they eat it alot. The thing is that when the salmon is caught the bears bring it back to the forest to eat it. The bears dont even eat all of it. In fact the bears only eat the fatty part. The left over carcasses can be use for other animals to eat. It is great nutrient to the other animals and provide food for the insects.

C: YOUR THOUGHTS.
Haha i actually didnt think that bears didnt eat all of it. When i watch bears on TV it seems that they just chomp the salmon down in 2 bites. But i guess that isnt true. When i read this i was really interested because it shows how each animal has a function that helps other animals. I look at it like if something dies then everything else will fall apart.
